The mission of the School Nurse is to ensure that students learn and practice healthy habits to advance their well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement.
Hi! I am Jamie Miller RN, BSN, the School Nurse at Legend Springs School in Glendale, AZ. I consider it a privilege to serve the students, staff and community at Legend Springs and encourage you to let me know any information that will help me provide the best care possible for your child. The Health Center is located in the Administration Building next to the main office. Please feel free to email, call or make an appointment to meet with me as needs arise. I am available Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 3:45 PM. If you need to meet outside of those hours, please check with me for availability and I will do my best to accommodate you.
SNACK SAFETY
🌟Important: Due to the health and safety of all students, and in an effort to adhere to the Safe Snack and Smart Snack Guidelines, Legend Springs will no longer be accepting outside birthday treats. Food can only be brought in for class parties and must be approved by the teacher and nurse ahead of time. You may purchase Birthday Treat Buckets from the cafeteria if you would like your child to have a birthday treat at school. The forms are available in the front office and can be found Birthday Treat Order Form
🌟We do not allow treats to be shared in the classroom to contain any nuts. Foods must be made and packaged in a nut-free facility. We encourage prepackaged items or other non-food items to be handed out for class parties. Please check with your teacher or the nurse before bringing items in for an approved class party.

LEARNING GOALS
1. Each student will recognize when to report illness and/or injury to the School Nurse to facilitate optimal treatment and recovery.
2. Each student will demonstrate an effective germ-killing procedure when washing their hands.
3. Each student will recognize playground safety, knowing when it is safe to play outside and how to play safely on the playground.
HEALTH OFFICE INFORMATION
The Health Office provides on-campus health screenings, assessment, and education, as well as first-aid and nursing care for students and staff. The Health Office is NOT A PRIMARY CARE FACILITY OR URGENT CARE. By law, a nurse is not allowed to make a medical diagnosis or prescribe treatment. This includes medication. I cannot keep in stock medications like Tylenol, ibuprofen, Benadryl, anti itch creams or cough drops. You must provide all the medications you want your child to have at school in the original containers and have a signed permission slip. Prescription medications also require a separate doctor's order to accompany the medication. When accidents or illness occur during school hours, basic first-aid and/or emergency care will be given according to AZ State Board of Nursing standards and practices. The nurse may suggest further medical follow-up in certain circumstances. Further care and follow up is the responsibility of the parents or guardians.
WEATHER ALERTS
Keeping our students safe when the weather is warm or the pollution is high is very important. We have two programs in place that help do that. The first is our heat advisory. The nurse will check each day and when our temperatures get warmer, she provides guidelines for students for safe play. This may include having no recess. The second program is the Air Quality Flag program. Each day a flag will fly in our courtyard, letting students know what color day we are having. We have four colors (green, yellow, orange and red) that let the children know how clean the air is and what changes they may need to make for their day at recess and when playing outside.
SCHOOL SCREENINGS
Hearing & Vision
Hearing and vision screenings are done on all students, including new (to district) students, and all students who receive services through the special education department. Parents and teachers can request a screening for any student at any time when a concern arises. Vision and hearing screenings for Legend Springs students are done in the fall, usually within the first month of school. These screenings are not a diagnosis but rather an indication that further screening and evaluation by your child's doctor is recommended. Vision referral letters are sent home to notify parents if the students have difficulties with any portion of the screening. Students who have difficulty with an initial hearing screening will be tested again in 30 days, and if still having problems, will be referred to an audiologist. Parents will be notified with a referral letter. We have a district audiologist that will see students at no cost. As always, please see your child's physician for any questions or concerns you may have.
